In any case, this is the "old" version of the gesture. In the middle of World War II, amendments were made to the law that removed the "salute" from the oath: now it is enough to hold the right hand to the heart. The reform was carried out precisely because in photographs the gesture with the raised hand was too reminiscent of the Nazi salute.

Loud scandals, when photographs of the "Bellamy salute" in the newspapers were interpreted as "zig", happened quite often back then. So Musk is far from the first who had to justify himself. Before him, there was, for example, Charles Lindbergh - a heroic pilot and socialite, in whose case "not zaig" was not the only reason for suspicion of sympathy for Hitler.

Musk's entourage is pushing this version - with the "Bellamy salute". It's beautiful, but weak in terms of plausibility.

Even 78-year-old homage to the old-style mom database flag: by the time he was born, schools had already switched to the new version. And Musk never attended American schools or joined a scout organization. He was born and raised in South Africa, moved to Canada at 17 , and only came to the United States at 19 .

In addition, a full pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag requires both the text of the pledge and the U.S. flag, which Musk did not have. Finally, the Bellamy salute always involves extending the arm straight out—directly toward the flag—not to the side and upward at an angle, as Musk does.

However, the gesture does not correspond to the Nazi salute either. Adolf Hitler borrowed it from the Italian fascists Benito Mussolini , who in turn borrowed it from ancient Rome , where the emperor was greeted in a similar manner. Extending the hand forward and upward directly from the heart has nothing to do with the fascism of the World War I era – rather, it is a later neo-Nazi invention.

Musk probably just got carried away: he gave in to emotions and did not realize how his gesture, which was neither a "zig", nor a "Bellamy salute", nor even something specific, could be perceived. This is already the second explanation for what is happening.
